Where Pep Guardiola is concerned it is usually a case of 'don't mention the subs'. The Manchester City manager rarely takes kindly to be quizzed on his strategy when it comes to replacements, responding with either a heavy dollop of sarcasm or a response that suggests he does, actually, know best.
There was an irony in City winning at Chelsea back in January as a result of two of Guardiola's subs combining, just days after he had been questioned for leaving it until the 87th minute to make alterations to his team when they were drawing at home to Everton.
In the Stamford Bridge press room, Guardiola quipped that he'd been decisive with his changes that night because he'd listened to the journalist who had asked him about his substitutes the previous day. It was classic Guardiola.

That game was one of 11 occasions in the first 37 games of this season where he used all five substitutes, but there were several occasions when his team looked to be in need of inspiration where changes weren't forthcoming. He didn't make any subs in the 1-1 draw at RB Leipzig.
In defeat at Anfield and Old Trafford he made just one and there were only two (the last one in the 89th minute) when losing at Tottenham. There was one in the 86th minute at home to Brentford, when City were yet to lose that game, just two in the draw at Aston Villa and one enforced change in the 3-3 at Newcastle.
But Guardiola is more comfortable changing his team when they've hit their stride and in their 10-game winning run there have been six occasions when he has used all five available substitutes. That has pulled him close to the rest of the pack when it comes to using his bench this season.
