Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes it would be increasingly difficult to argue that Manchester City are not the greatest English football team if they win the Champions League this season.
Carragher was speaking after City took a leap towards securing the treble on Wednesday night. A Kevin De Bruyne brace sandwiched between goals for John Stones and Erling Haaland saw the Blues beat Arsenal 4-1 and subsequently move two points behind the Gunners.
As well as being in contention for the Premier League, City have reached the FA Cup final where they will meet Manchester United and are in the last four of the Champions League where Real Madrid await. In his Daily Telegraph column post-match, Carragher lauded Pep Guardiola's current crop and claimed they are better than the Manchester United treble-winning team of 1999.

"This City side is superior to the Manchester United team that won the treble in 1999," the 45-year-old explained. "There is barely any similarity in how they are going about trying to match that achievement.
"If City win the Champions League this season there will be those who believe we are watching the best English club team of all time. It would become increasingly difficult to argue against that view."
On Twitter, former United captain Gary Neville raised his grievance about overlooking the treble side. However, Carragher doubled down on his reasoning on the social media site.
"The Man United treble team did not influence European football," the former Liverpool defender wrote. "Those other teams/managers are still talked about today in terms of influencing the current generation of managers & tactics."
