Kate Garraway admitted to shedding tears as she returned to work on Good Morning Britain for the first time since the death of her husband Derek Draper. On Thursday (February 8), the presenter returned to the helm of the ITV news programme alongside co-host and friend Ben Shephard.
Kate had already confirmed she'd be back at work during an interview with her co-stars Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley on Monday (February 5), days after she laid her beloved husband to rest. The 56-year-old announced on January 5 that Derek had sadly passed away, almost four years after Covid changed his and his family's life forever.
The former Labour lobbyist-turned-psychotherapist became ill with the virus at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. He was taken to hospital where he was put in an induced coma, with Kate previously saying how Covid had "wreaked havoc" on her husband's body. Derek spent more than a year in hospital before returning home to his wife and their children in April 2021, needing around-the-clock care.

Derek then fell seriously ill before Christmas after suffering a cardiac arrest. He died on January 3 aged 56 with Kate explaining in her statement that "the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications."
As she opened GMB on Thursday, Kate confessed she was "in tears" as soon as she got to the studio as she reunited with the crew. She said: "The make-up girls had me in tears this morning just by saying hello. Thank you to all of you at home as well, I know I mentioned it on Monday but you have been incredible."
