A prison officer accused of murdering his friend told jurors that he feared he was going to ‘possibly rape’ him so put him in a chokehold to ‘regain control’.
James Johnson, 29, is alleged to have put David Toulson in a ‘deliberate and dangerous chokehold’ following birthday celebrations for Mr Toulson at his flat in Salford on June 25 last year.
Mr Johnson denies murder and is on trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Giving evidence, Mr Johnson told jurors that he had met Mr Toulson just a few months before when he went on a day trip to the Peak District with his friend and former colleague, Ellie Smith.
He said they ‘got on’, adding: “He was quite open about his sexuality as a gay man, he didn’t mention a partner.
“The rest of the time we were just having a laugh and enjoying the time. We got on. He was a nice guy. We clicked pretty quickly”
Mr Johnson said they both had a similar sense of humour, adding that it was ‘dark’.

He said he was aware that Mr Toulson created content on OnlyFans, and said Mr Toulson showed him a promotion of his account on Twitter which showed him in a balaclava with handcuffs.
When asked by his barrister, Richard Littler KC, if it bothered him, he said: “No, because technically, it’s his work. It doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t affect me. It’s what he does. There was no reason to think anything different of him because of what he was doing.”
