Lionesses and Manchester City star Chloe Kelly was England’s hero yet again as she scored the winning penalty in a dramatic shootout victory for her side against a resilient Nigeria.
England struggled and were largely outplayed by the Super Falcons in Brisbane, a side looking to become the first African side to reach the last eight of a Women’s World Cup.
But thanks to the crossbar and some defiant stops from Manchester United 'keeper Mary Earps, Sarina Wiegman’s side held on to force extra time and a shootout - despite star Lauren James being sent off.
And following two missed Nigerian penalties, Kelly rifled the decisive spotkick into the top corner to book England a quarter-final spot.
Later in the day it was a much more straightforward evening for Australia, the host nation easing past Denmark to reach the last eight.
Caitlin Foord and former Manchester City star Hayley Raso found the back of the net in a 2-0 triumph, and there was further good news for The Matildas.
World Cup poster girl Sam Kerr came off the bench for her first appearance of the tournament, setting alarm bells ringing for the remaining teams.
Kelly the hero but James sent off as England scrape victory
England were expecting to come up against a well-organised side in Nigeria, who had impressed in the group stages.
But very few could have predicted how much the Super Falcons would trouble England. Nigeria were by far the better team across the 120 minutes but were unable to make that count by finding the back of the net.
Michelle Alozie saw a powerful header blocked by Alessia Russo inside the opening 15 minutes, and former Leicester star Ashleigh Plumptre smacked the crossbar and forced a save from Earps within the space of 30 seconds.
