More than a month since first walking out, bus drivers who face 'daily abuse' have been making their voices heard. Unite the Union members working for First Manchester have today (Friday, August 4) walked out in a dispute over pay and conditions.
Industrial action began almost five weeks ago, but spirits were high among colleagues who claimed bosses at First see them 'just as a number'. The latest strike comes as an eye-opening staff survey revealed financial strife among those who have walked out from the Oldham depot.
The survey of 184 drivers at First Manchester, carried out by Unite, found 61 per cent had cut back on essentials like food and heating in the past year. It found 20pc had missed mortgage or rent payments; 15pc had skipped meals; and 4pc had used foodbanks.

Neil Fitzpatrick, Unite branch secretary at First Manchester, said: "At this moment in time, everybody is struggling. The interest rates, even this week, went up.
"Food banks are being used more and more now, everyone is really struggling, and what we're asking for is not unreasonable." First insists it has made a 'generous' pay increase offer of 15.2pc, which would make drivers based at the Oldham depot 'some of the best-paid in the region'.
The union says First currently pays drivers 'a pound an hour less than the region's other bus operators', following a hike of around 3pc last year when inflation was already soaring, and that the increase on the table has been proposed in three parts - one backdated to April, one implemented from October and another increase in January. Members want to see a full increase backdated to April.
