An entitled generation is used to never being told no and takes 'pride' in disrespecting authority, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police said. Stephen Watson said that his beat officers are often told 'you can't tell me not to do that' when police challenge 'unacceptable' behaviour.
GMP's top cop told a fringe meeting at the Conservative Party conference that he wants to challenge this mindset. He said the 'sooner we correct that – however we do that – the better for all of us', the Daily Mail reports.
Ch Con Watson said: "I do think what has changed in large measure over recent times is we are growing a generation of people who have never had anybody say 'no' to them. The trust and respect for people in a hierarchy has broken down and I think people take pride in not respecting others because they somehow see it as demeaning to respect other people.
"And we have seen a post-Covid feeling in the air where this strange sense of entitlement has become amplified. So many of my officers will tackle people who are doing things that are demonstrably unacceptable, and the response will almost inevitably be, 'You can't tell me not to do that.'"
The chief constable, one of the country's most senior policing leaders, joined GMP in 2021 after occupying the same role at South Yorkshire Police. GMP was placed in special measures in December 2020 after a report revealed an estimated 80,000 crimes had not been properly recorded but, in October last year, His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary lifted the sanction and praised the force for improvements made.
