One of the most powerful public officials in Greater Manchester has announced he will be retiring. Eamonn Boylan will step down as chief executive of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) in May.
Mr Boylan took the top job at the GMCA in 2017, giving him responsibility over Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) too. In 2019, he also took over TfGM and oversaw the process of bringing buses under public control for the first time in four decades.
His 42-year career has included working in local government in Manchester, Sheffield and London as well as serving as Stockport council's chief executive before taking the helm at the GMCA. He will step down after the next mayoral elections in May 2024.

Mr Boylan has steered GMCA and TfGM through a period in which the government has given both organisations more responsibilities to make decisions and run services locally. He spearheaded the 'trailblazer' devolution deal which local leaders signed earlier this year.
The agreement gives politicians and public officials in Greater Manchester more influence over transport, education and housing. It follows previous devolution deals which saw Andy Burnham's role as mayor created and allowed him to bring in bus franchising.
Last month, Greater Manchester became the first place in the country to take buses back under public control for nearly forty years with the launch of the London-style public transport network called the Bee Network in Bolton and Wigan. All buses in the city-region will be under public control by 2025 allowing local leaders
