Members of the public are being told to only attend a Greater Manchester A&E if their condition is 'serious or life-threatening' amid another warning about mounting pressures on its services.
The accident and emergency department at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, operated by Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is 'very busy'. The trust shared a warning this morning (January 29) that 'if you come to the emergency department with something minor you will wait longer to be seen'.
"Our emergency department is very busy," read a message put out by the trust on X, formerly known as Twitter. "You’ll be seen in order of clinical priority and may experience a wait to be seen."

The trust added: "If it is not an emergency please use NHS 111 online to determine the most appropriate place for your health needs."
Earlier this month, the same A&E in Wigan was struggling with high demand. People were told to only attend the emergency department in 'life-threatening emergencies' such as loss of consciousness, fits that are not stopping, chest pain, breathing difficulties, severe bleeding or burns, severe allergic reactions, a stroke or major trauma.
A message shared by Dr Muhammed Saleem Nasir on January 10 said the trust was experiencing a 'high demand' on emergency services and that 'many of the patients' in the emergency department could have been seen elsewhere, therefore prolonging the wait times even further.
"We are doing all we can to help those patients presenting to us with serious illness, or life or limb-threatening injuries. They need our urgent care the most," Dr Nasir said in a desperate plea that night.
