Oldham's post Industrial Revolution landscape is well suited William Blake's description of 'dark satanic mills', one of the most striking lines in his famous poem - later adopted in the hymn, Jerusalem. But for some, an older, more natural part of its landscape holds a dark and ancient significance.
The area around Saddleworth Moor has long been associated with mysticism and ritual. The 'Pots and Pans' monument at the top of the hill overlooking Uppermill and Greenfield is a cenotaph erected in 1923 to honour the 259 Saddleworth villagers who lost their lives in the Great War.
But Pots and Pans is actually the name of the rock at the top of the hill overlooking Uppermill, taking its name from a large indentations, or basins, caused by aeons of merciless Saddleworth weather shaping the stone. But the rock with its pan-shaped indentations is also known locally as the 'Druid's stone', rumoured to have been used to catch the blood from human sacrifices.
Perhaps these dark stories are just that, stories. The bleak and desolate landscape leading the imagination to create the fairies and Boggarts said to have been drawn to this spot of moorland.
But there have also been true stories that added another wash of dark ink to this already sombre landscape. In 1949, a BEA Douglas DC3 aircraft crashed into the hill at Wimberrry Stones killing 24 passengers and crew; eight survived.
But undoubtedly the most unsettling association people make with Saddleworth is its infamy as the burial site of at least four of the child victims of Moors murderers, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, in the 1960s.
