Greater Manchester is home to its fair share of haunted locations, from pubs with levitating pint glasses to music venues with reports of paranormal activity. But there’s one place which is particularly creepy, especially at Halloween when ghostly beings come out to play.
Smithills Hall, a Tudor manor house located on the edge of Bolton, is one of the most haunted places in the city-region. From the ghost of a man burned at the stake to the sound of horses running through the grounds, there’s been a range of strange incidents reported over the years - it's even appeared in an episode of Most Haunted.
The Grade I-listed hall was passed from various families across the generations. It was first mentioned in written records in 1335 when it was obtained by William Radcliffe.

Different families from the local area came to own the hall over the years, including the Barton family who lived there for almost 200 years from 1485. It then entered a period of neglect before the Ainsworth family bought the hall in 1801.
In 1938 the estate was sold to Bolton Council, with the Victorian parts of the hall becoming a residential home and later a day centre until the late 1990s. The hall was partially opened up as a museum, which was eventually extended in the 1990s.
With such a diverse range of owners and uses, you’d expect Smithills Hall to have a few ghost stories within its walls - and it certainly does. One of the most famous tales is that of George Marsh and the Green.
