Labour has hit out at the government over a funding miscalculation that means Greater Manchester schools will receive £22m less than they were originally told they would get. The Department for Education (DfE) has apologised for the 'technical error' in the announcement.
Schools minister Nick Gibb confirmed in Parliament the provisional funding for schools for the next academic year in July. But last month, the DfE admitted that officials made a mistake with that figure - which related to the number of pupils forecast to be in state education by then.
Labour says schools in Greater Manchester will be more than £22m worse off as a result of the government's 'staggering mathematical incompetence'. The biggest impact will be felt in Manchester where funding is around £3.8m less than previously announced while Bolton, Oldham, Stockport and Wigan have lost more than £2m each for their schools, according to analysis by the opposition party.

The DfE has described Labour's claims as a 'misrepresentation', arguing that the changes will not affect any funding that schools have already received. However, according to Labour's analysis, the impact on schools in the North West is greater than in other regions.
In total, North West schools will get £53,348,157 less than previously announced which Labour says is £16m more than the average loss per region. Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson claims the average loss per school in Greater Manchester is around £21,500.
