King Charles is set to deliver his first King's Speech as monarch today which will include a list of legislation the Tories plan to deliver over the next Parliamentary term.
The state opening of Parliament traditionally marks the new Parliamentary session every year and will see MPs, peers, and the monarch all gather at the Palace of Westminster for the occasion. The King's role in the speech is to deliver the programme for the session which he will read out on behalf of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the government.
Customs involved in the ceremony date as far back as the 17th century and include the iconic Black Road banging on the door of the Commons. Away from the traditions of the ceremony though, it will also provide insight into the priorities of the Prime Minister and his government, potentially setting the stage for a general election in the near future.

It has been confirmed that plans to "phase out" leaseholds will be featured in the speech after housing minister Rachel Maclean said the delayed reform will now be brought forward. It comes following growing concerns about the practices in the leasehold sector, such as the levying of high charges and a lack of transparency.
Bans will also be introduced in new leasehold houses so that all new properties are freehold straight out the gate. However, this may differ for flats where ministers are expected to deliver a reformed commonhold system.
