Emmerdale legend Matthew Wolfenden, who has played David Metcalfe for 17 years, has reportedly quit his role on the ITV soap.
The actor joined the Dales in 2006 and is now said to be leaving soapland behind. It's claimed the actor could even see his character killed off, with recent storylines reportedly the reason for his exit from the show, writes the Mirror.
David has had some huge storylines over the years, including his partner Maya Stepney grooming and sexually abusing his teenage son Jacob Gallagher.
But according to sources, actor Matthew is "ready for a change" and wants to take on some new roles.
Matthew, who is married to former co-star Charley Webb, is yet to confirm that he is leaving and soap bosses are also yet to announce the news. But according to sources, an exit is being worked on currently and it could see David die in a major twist.
A TV source told The Sun : “Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change. He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.
"He’s a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next. He’s very excited about the opportunities available. He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It’s possible David could be killed off."
ITV have been contacted for comment.
