Dimitar Berbatov says Rasmus Hojlund will break his Premier League duck by playing smarter rather than harder, although acknowledged that this ploy may rub off the wrong way on some Manchester United fans.
He explained how continually running and pressing can bring the adulation of supporters but consequently leave strikers out of position due to fatigue. United fans have been impressed with Hojlund’s start to life at Old Trafford, having scored five Champions League goals so far.
However, he is yet to find the net in 11 Premier League matches - something Berbatov believes will be playing on the Dane’s mind. The Bulgarian himself, who scored 56 times in 149 appearances for United between 2008 and 2012, was not the type of striker to go pressing during his playing days.

However, he earned the adulation of the fanbase with his clever movements and clinical finishing. Berbatov has told Hojlund that he may need to adopt a similar tack.
He told Betfair: “Sometimes when you focus on the other parts of your game, you're not in the right position to actually score goals when the ball is in the box because you're tired after doing everything else. That's why I sometimes say that you need to work smart, not hard.
“It's very hard because if you don't score in a game and you also don't do any of the other stuff, the fans will say you're doing nothing and they'll say you're lazy.
"That's why some players compensate by chasing the ball and doing the hard yards because at least they'll make the fans clap and appreciate what you're doing.
“Eventually, as time goes on and you still haven't scored, it doesn't matter what you do.
