A possible suspect in the unsolved murder of banker Alistair Wilson is a former 999 worker.
Alistair was gunned down on his doorstep by a mystery assailant. The 30-year-old’s death in 2004 remains one of Scotland’s most high-profile unsolved murders.
But detectives have identified a suspect, who is currently in prison for an unrelated offence, and are said to be working to build a case.
A police source said a partial DNA sample recovered from the murder in Nairn has also been obtained.
The Record can reveal that the man, whose identity is well-known among locals in the small Highland town, and was known for keeping guns in his home.
A source close to the investigation said: “There’s a partial DNA sample but it isn’t suitable for full testing.
Hopefully advances in the technology will help us to rule suspects in or out.
“There is a theory that this man, if not the person who pulled the trigger, could have supplied the weapon.”
The source added: “This man was also known for carrying knives. If he’s involved he knows the answers as to why Alistair was killed and who is behind it. “
Alistair and his wife Veronica had been bathing their two young sons when there was a knock at the door.
When Alistair went to the door, the killer handed him a blue envelope which had the name Paul on it.
He went inside to show his wife but the envelope was empty. When he returned to the door, he was shot.
The dad-of-two was rushed to hospital, where he died a short time later. No one has ever been charged with his murder despite several cold cases reviewed and thousands of interviews conducted by investigators.
