Coronation Street has reached the end of an era this week, as Peter Barlow exits the soap and calls an end to his relationship with Carla Connor. Actor Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter, has said goodbye to his career on the show.
It was revealed earlier this year that Chris would be leaving the ITV show after 23 years. He first appeared as young Peter in 2000 during Coronation Street's 40th anniversary live episode - and left again in 2003.
He returned for a brief time in 2007, before coming back permanently in 2008. In January 2014 it was confirmed that Chris would be leaving once again, but the following year he reprised the role for two episodes for the funeral of Deirdre Barlow, played by Anne Kirkbride, reports Manchester Evening News.
Then in 2016, Peter made a return to Weatherfield, and Chris remained in the role ever since - until now. This exit comes after Chris's character struggled with guilt over his involvement in the death of the evil Stephen Reid.
During Boxing Day's episode, Peter and Carla looked back over their relationship and realised that while they will always love each other, they are better off apart.
Then, as Peter heads out with Carla to the tram stop to leave, he is surprised to find his whole family - aside from Simon - waiting outside. Peter exchanges emotional farewells with each of them and promises Ken that he’ll keep in touch.
Chris has previously spoken about how he was pleased that the death of evil Stephen had opened up the door for his own exit. He said: "It just came together at the right time.
"I've learned a bit more about Peter than I knew before. The more that I know, the more that I see this side of him the more I like him, he's got a lot of depth and it has been great to explore
