Peter Barlow has bid farewell to Weatherfield in emotional scenes aired on Boxing Day - leaving Coronation Street fans 'sobbing'. The character, played by actor Chris Gascoyne, departed the cobbles with a one-way ticket on December 26, after starring in the ITV soap for more than two decades.
Emotional scenes on Christmas Day saw Peter's partner Carla Connor gift him a boarding pass so that he could go travel. It comes after Peter's difficult year which saw him struggle with the guilt over his involvement in the death of serial killer Stephen Reid.
Upon receiving the boarding pass, a confused Peter said: "A plane ticket? One way?" to which Carla explained: "It's to join your mate's crew!" Peter then asked where Carla's boarding pass was to which she admitted: "It's a present for you... I'm not coming, love."

As Peter debated whether or not to leave his life in Weatherfield, the soap's Boxing Day episode saw him and Carla look back over their tumultuous relationship as they realised that, although they will always love each other, maybe they are better off apart.
Tearful scenes saw the couple sit down for what was to be their last supper together as they reflected on their past and future. Carla told Peter: "You are the love of my life, but I'm not enough for you. This life doesn't fit you anymore, it's making you really unhappy. You said you're sleepwalking through your life."
Viewers then saw one of the soap's' most-loved relationships draw to a close as Peter decided to take Carla's gift and head off on his own. The next morning
