Christmas is edging closer with many starting preparations, from food to presents. However, one thing that is difficult to prepare for is the weather.
Snow is often associated with the big day as a White Christmas makes the occasion extra special for many. But what are the chances of a White Christmas for Scotland this year?
Bookmakers release their odds for snow flurries well in advance of December 25, with the weather conditions, of course, subject to change. However, as things stand, it looks like snowfall on Christmas day is pretty likely.
Bookmakers BetVictor have priced up the odds for which UK cities are most likely going to see snow on Christmas day, with three Scottish cities featuring on the list. Glasgow and Edinburgh are currently priced at 7/4, with Aberdeen also features, albeit looking a little less likely, at 14/1.
Sam Boswell, spokesperson of BetVictor, gave some more detail on the market, saying: “The latest weather forecast is predicting snow around November 25 – just a month before Christmas. Our traders are having a good guess at the price for a White Christmas across 14 locations in the UK and Ireland. Unexpectedly it’s a couple of Scottish locations with the shortest prices as we can’t split Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, which are both 7/4.”
According to the Met Office definition, a White Christmas occurs when one snowflake is "observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December somewhere in the UK".
With more than a month left until Christmas, the forecasters highlight that it is a little early to say for definite if and where we could see snow on December 25.
The Met Office says: "We can accurately forecast if snow is likely on any given Christmas Day up to five days beforehand."
