Students across England have today found out whether months of hard work has paid off as the results of their A Level exams were finally revealed.
For some students, it will be a disappointing day as they won't have achieved the grades they need for their first-choice university. But that doesn't mean all hope is lost.
There is a process called clearing which matches applicants to university places that are yet to be filled – so even if you haven't applied yet, you may still be able to find a course you want to join.

Clearing is available to students who do not meet the conditions of their offer on A Level results day, as well as those who did not receive any offers. Students who have changed their mind about what or where they wish to study, and also those who have applied outside the normal application window, can also use clearing.
However, hopeful applicants have they been told they need to be “quick off the mark” this year, as competition for degree places at top universities will be tougher this summer than in previous years. Some top universities have just a handful of courses available through clearing, while others have no vacancies listed at all.
Clare Marchant, chief executive of Ucas, warned: “It’s getting more competitive which means places are filled up quicker and therefore there are slightly less in clearing and the competitive stuff that is in clearing is likely to go faster.” She added: “Every year it’s going to become slightly more competitive, just simply because the demographics of 18-year-olds are increasing year on year and we’re still very internationally attractive.”
