When Boris Johnson came to North Manchester General in September 2019 he made a bold promise to build a brand new hospital.
Full of bluster ahead of the Tory Party conference, the then Prime Minister had been chatting to NHS staff with the promise of huge investment. He answered my questions in optimistic tones. But - ever the journalist - he couldn’t resist telling me what the story was.
“The story here in North Manchester General Hospital is that you’ve got incredible staff, incredible doctors, incredible nurses doing cutting edge stuff. They are brilliant but the facilities aren’t good enough. It’s like asking a premiership footballer to play on a ploughed field," he said.
Shortly afterwards, Number 10 made an official announcement claiming the hospital would get millions of pounds in ‘seed funding’ to get its upgrade off the ground in the next ten years. But sharing a £100m pot with 20 other projects would mean roughly a hundredth of the total rebuild funding sought by the city was committed that day. Not quite enough for a 'premiership' hospital.
Nevertheless, Mr Johnson went even further in his language during the visit, saying he was giving North Manchester the 'go ahead' for a complete rebuild and reportedly telling a surgeon the community would ‘get a new hospital’.
In a broadcast interview, he directly referenced the city’s new proposal for a massive £500m transformation of the site into a new health campus. He praised the city's 'fantastic' plans to 'to integrate health care, social care, to tackle deprivation

People across Greater Manchester were looking to the skies in unison on Friday afternoon in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Red Arrows flying past.
Rain is expected to hit the region later this week, as the UK recorded its hottest day of 2023 so far. According to the Met Office, Thursday (September 7) was provisionally the hottest day of the year so far, with 32.6C recorded in Wisley, Surrey.

Plans to build a brand new theatre at Wrightington Hospital have been tabled in the hope they reduce waiting lists.
The busiest road in Manchester city centre will be closed this weekend. Transport bosses have announced that the Mancunian Way will be shut in both directions from 5am on Saturday, September 9 to 7pm on Sunday, September 10.
