Hello,
Slowly and methodically climbing an enormous chimney stack, Fred Dibnah pauses momentarily to clamber up onto the wooden staging that surrounds the top of the tower. Fearlessly hanging off the side as he pulls himself up - with no safety gear and no insurance, of course - it’s a death-defying moment.
This was the first television appearance for the Bolton-born steeplejack, who went on to become a household name and television personality. But back in 1979 the BBC captured him demolishing a tower single-handedly and brick-by-brick for the princely sum of just £7,000.
Though it was a decent payout at the time, even Fred said he didn’t initially want the job and assumed he got it because ‘the other fellas wanted a hell of a lot more’.
“When there’s only one of you and such a gigantic pile of bricks you’ve got to have a stout heart to take it on on your own,” he said at the time. No kidding...
“Really you’re dicing with death with a rotten old top on the chimney. There’s been a lot of men died fiddling with them things.”
The footage of him fearlessly chucking bricks to the ground as a man in a cloth cap waits patiently below to pick them up is a sight to behold. And would surely put a lump in the throat of most. But also spare a thought for the person filming this feat, who had to lug a huge camera up the tower too.
"I’ve never fell off a big chimney. You only fall off one of them once,” said Fred at the time, in his wisdom.
