As Manchester Pride kicked off this morning, Adam Maidment was enjoying brunch at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel with Antony Cotton. It sounds like a fairly iconic way to start the celebrations to me.
The Corrie actor told LGBTQ+ writer Adam that the hotel holds personal resonance for him. He stayed there 24 years ago as he filmed scenes for his first big role in Queer as Folk - a show that had a huge impact on LGBTQ+ people across the country and Manchester’s gay scene.
“That show changed the world and it changed how gay people were depicted in television dramas. I’m not just saying that because it was important to us, but it really was a game-changer and it still is today,” he said.
Antony says his Coronation Street character Sean Tully - a man ‘unapologetically who he is' - would not exist without Queer As Folk. And he feels the soap’s creator Tony Warren, who was openly gay himself, did much to bring the LGBTQ+ community to a wider audience. “When Coronation Street began, it was filled with iconic women because television wasn’t allowed to have gay characters back then, so he wrote them all as his favourite women,” Antony said.
The actor - who has been to every Manchester Pride festival for the last 23 years - says the event is a ‘beacon’ to people around the world. “They can see that there’s a whole community there who will welcome you, love you and support you.”
This week Adam also spoke to Jason Kwan - who is part of the pan-Asian collective Bitten Peach - for his weekly LGBTQ+ Bulletin, which you can sign up for
