Shakar Hussain knows first-hand what it's like to fall on hard times. Shakar, 49, originally from Pakistan, came to the UK aged 10. He grew up in Cheetham Hill before his family settled in neighbouring Crumpsall.
After leaving school he did a number of jobs including factory worker, private hire taxi driver and pharmacy dispenser. But before that, a disagreement with his parents over the direction of his future career saw him leave the family home and become homeless.
"I kind of put myself in that situation, but I had nowhere to go," he said. "In the old Piccadilly Gardens, I used to sleep on one of the benches there. I used to kind of, just roam around the streets, and get help from where I could."

That was until he met his now-wife Shabnam. "We went high school together, she saw me, we recognised each other, and she started talking to me and asking 'what's wrong with you, what's happened?" he said.
"And when I told her I was living homeless, she started supporting me. The next day she brought me some kebabs, which I can never forget. They were the tastiest kebabs I've ever had. Three months down the line we decided to get married, and we got our own house after that."
He only spent a few weeks on the streets, but he says his experience furthered his lifelong desire to help others. "It taught me a lot," he said. "And cemented my passion for helping the community, helping families with kids because we don't want any families to struggle like we did. Whatever you do in your life is always inside you, you just need that trigger point."
