But now its main rival Aldi is nipping at its heels, with a bill that's just 2p more for the basket, which is made up tea bags, milk, bread, butter, coffee, beans, chicken and mince. Lidl's comes to £12.02, with Aldi's £12.04.
It comes after some recent price rises at Lidl, including tea bags and chicken breasts, and because we agreed to factor in Aldi's cheaper 25% mince, which is a truer comparison with Lidl's. The cheapest available from the other retailers is 20% fat.
Tesco is 'most expensive' for a second week after taking the unfortunate title from Asda last week when the latter reduced the price of its 300g pack of chicken breasts from £3 to £2.65.
