But a cruel pre-season knee injury crushed any hope of Amad starring in the opening months of the campaign. The fact Jadon Sancho is banished from the squad and Antony has performed poorly could have opened a window of opportunity for the Ivorian.
Amad is back on the grass but still some way from a comeback, with his participation in next month’s African Cup of Nations up in the air. Speaking at his post-match press conference, Sunderland boss Mowbray, who has lost his last two Championship fixtures, confessed to being left in the dark about a possible second loan move.
"You are asking the wrong person to be honest,” he told reporters. “I don't know what the plans are for January at the moment, we haven't really discussed it yet.
"I would imagine, if he's going to be fit, he'll be going off to the Africa Cup of Nations. I don't think he'd be available for the whole of January. Let's see what the club are thinking of how we are doing by then."
