Robbie Savage believes Manchester United would have been better off keeping David de Gea but insists the boat has passed on re-signing him.
De Gea left United as a free agent at the start of summer, having failed to agree a contract extension on reduced terms. The 33-year-old's future had long been uncertain, with manager Erik ten Hag keen to bring in a goalkeeper who can play out from the back.
Ten Hag sanctioned a £47.2million purchase of Andre Onana from Inter Milan, having worked with him at Ajax beforehand. But despite some encouraging moments, the Cameroon international has endured a torrid start to life in Manchester and was at fault for at least two goals in United's 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Wednesday.

United were 2-0 and 3-1 up at different point but Onana twice gave Galatasaray an avenue back into the game, allowing two weak free-kicks from Hakim Ziyech to go past him before Muhammed Aktürkoğlu's equaliser.
“Onana is better at playing out from the back, he looks calm and composed doing that, but fundamentally in the big moments, would United have been better off keeping De Gea? I think so," Savage told Planet Sport Bet. "I do think they now need to stick with Onana for at least this season. However, if his poor form continues then they should look to replace him with a goalkeeper who can play out, but can also be a better all-round keeper.
