Lacking certain vitamins and minerals can manifest in our bodies - and missing out on our iron might cause some unusual symptoms.
We get iron from food including including meat, eggs, leafy green vegetables, nuts and fortified breakfast cereals. A number of factors can contribute to iron deficiency, including not consuming enough iron, blood loss and even pregnancy.
Heavy periods and bleeding in the stomach and intestines is the most common cause of iron deficiency, according to the NHS. Low iron levels can lead to iron deficiency anaemia, which, if left untreated could cause complications. A lack of iron affects the immune system, so you could be more at risk of illness and infection.

You could also develop complications with the heart or lungs, including an abnormally fast heartbeat or heart failure. And in pregnancy, low iron levels could increase the risk of complications before and after birth.
According to the NHS, common symptoms can include tiredness and lack of energy, shortness of breath, noticeable heartbeats (heart palpitations) and pale skin. However there are some less common - and rather unusual - symptoms to be aware of.
One includes craving and eating non-food items, such as paper, clay, soil or ice. This is known as pica. It's not fully understood why pica occurs, but one study suggests that ice chewing might increase alertness in people with iron deficiency anaemia, according to Mayo Clinic.
Healthline adds that some iron deficient people might eat potentially dangerous items, such as flakes of dried paint or pieces of metal. This could lead to some serious consequences, such as lead poisoning.
