There are some early signs of dementia that may even be noticeable before loss of memory, according to a GP.
Dementia is a progressive condition impacting a person's brain function, resulting in a decline of cognitive skills - such as memory and reasoning - as well as speech and emotions over time.
Despite there being no cure, it is important to diagnose the condition quickly to allow a treatment plan and medications to be put in place in order to best manage symptoms. And according to one GP, there are a handful of early warning signs to look out for that may indicate the onset of dementia.
Many are aware that memory problems may be a warning sign. However, according to Dr Johannes Uys, from Broadgate General Practice, said: “In some cases, physical symptoms can also appear before memory loss in dementia", reports the Daily Express.
The GP went on to share these four early signs to look out for:
The doctor went on to explain that these symptoms are more commonly linked to certain types of dementia, such as Parkinson's disease dementia.
Additionally, the expert said that symptoms vary from person to person, with each sufferer experiencing dementia differently.
“However, if you notice any of these early signs in yourself or a loved one, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and intervention can help manage symptoms and provide the necessary support", he added.
There are certain risk factors of dementia. Some are non-negotiable - such as age - but there are others that may be tackled through lifestyle changes in younger years.
