Sunday's episode of the Antique's Roadshow left viewers and guests at the event stunned when an item with a lot of Scottish history was valued and found to be worth "a lot more" than anticipated. The recent instalment of the popular BBC show was filmed at Glasgow's Pollok Park and it featured a mirror worth more than a bob or two, thanks to its links to the city's prestigious art school.
The guest who had brought the piece in to be looked at was left shocked when its true worth was revealed. She admitted she "wouldn't have guessed' the amount, as shocked onlookers could be heard gasping when it was announced. As the woman and her daughter introduced the brass mirror to expert Will Farmer to examine, he seemed overjoyed with the find.
Will was quick to praise the work that had gone into creating the mirror, as he learned of its backstory and its family link to the current "custodian" of it.
Will explained that the mirror was created at the Glasgow School of Art circa 1929, adding that it was quite late for such a design. The guest confirmed the mirror originally belonged to her mother-in-law but it had been handed down to her.
When her daughter went to hang it up in a hallway, she noticed a note on the back of it which her mum hadn't spotted before.
Will read this notice out, which stated: "Designed and worked by Marion Wilson for Charlotte Stewart who gifted it to Margaret Lawson on her wedding day dated 1929."
The guest then explained: "The bride was my mother-in-law and it was her aunt Charlotte who commissioned the mirror from Marion Wilson."
Will went on: "If you look at it apart from the sheer joy of it, the style, the essence, everything it evokes, we do just have MHW [written on it] which is Marion Henderson Wilson."
