Campaigners condemned the Prime Minister for failing to reassure all those affected by the contaminated blood scandal they would be compensated.
Rishi Sunak was jeered as he vowed to pay compensation to victims of the “appalling scandal as swiftly as possible”.
His promise that the Government’s work on compensation “continues at pace” was laughed at by those in the public gallery at the Infected Blood Inquiry.
Bruce Norval, 58, from Inverness, was furious after listening to Sunak’s evidence, describing his performance as “cynical and despicable”.
Under pressure from counsel Jenni Richards KC to confirm the Government would follow recommendations of chair Sir Brian Langstaff, Sunak said ministers would move as quickly as “thoroughness allows”.
He acknowledged that those infected were dying at a rate of one every four days yet refused to commit to compensating parents and children of those who died.
Bruce, a haemophiliac infected with hepatitis C by the NHS 55 years ago, said: “It suits the Government to delay. They know that the parents of those who have died are all elderly and dying out steadily.
“Unbelievably, they are recognising the scandal and our suffering, but they’re still playing games to save money.
“Since February, nine alone have died, and if you include people who were partners or parents, that rises to 13.”
