A Scots adventurer is half-way through a rapid world tour, visiting four of the globe's seven continents in just 16 days. Alex Hempton, from Edinburgh, and four pals planned the trip of a lifetime for £1,150 each - just £71 per day.
They set off from London last month on the jaunt after securing cheap flights while being willing to visit wherever they could. The £1,150 they shelled out on their holiday includes accommodation.
With the group on limited annual leave from their jobs, they decided to condense a typical gap-year's worth of travelling into just 16 days. The squad is visiting Malta, Serbia, UAE, The Maldives, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Qatar, Egypt, and Greece, before finishing back in the UK.
The Mirror reports how Alex used Booking.com to mass-reserve the group's accommodation for the trip, managing to keep it to just £130 per person.
Alex, who works in marketing, said: "The main premise is it is with all my friends who are working and studying, and it's hard to get people together for months at a time.
"I got them free for two and a half weeks and went on SkyScanner and clicked 'London to everywhere' to see what comes up. We are travelling to 10 different countries across the world starting from the UK."
He added: "Our 16 nights in total consist of a shared flat in Malta, a hostel in Serbia, overnight in the airport in Abu Dhabi, and a pod hostel in the Maldives."
Some locations have been eye opening, with Alex saying the Indian Ocean islands were far from the images of white sands and glistening blue waters associated with the destination.
He explained: "(The accommodation) was like a fridge put sideways, it was like a coffin. You had to walk through a construction site to get there. We were on the main island. I
