The number of fines dished out to parents for children missing school has soared to record levels.
Latest figures reveal almost a 60% increase in fines, most of them for term-time holidays.
The statistics from the Department for Education reveal that more than 40,000 penalty notices were issued to parents across the region in the 2022/23 school year. That's up massively from just 25,300 the year before - a 58% increase - and is the highest number ever recorded.

Nearly 33,800 of those fines were due to unauthorised term-time holidays, again a record high, while 50 were due to late attendance, and around 6,200 were for other reasons.
The rate of fines given does differ drastically across the various local authority areas in Greater Manchester.
In Rochdale for example, the number issued equates to 15 fines for every 100 pupils in the area, compared to just one fine issued for every 100 pupils in Wigan.
Parents have a legal duty to make sure their child attends school, and if they don’t they can be issued with a £60 fine that must be paid within 21 days, otherwise the amount increases to £120.
But with the cost of holidays being so much cheaper in term time, many parents choose to pay the fine as it can often mean saving hundreds if not thousands of pounds, which for some people makes the difference between having a holiday or not.
If still unpaid after 28 days, the parents can be taken to court, where they can face fines of up to £2,500 or a three month prison sentence.
