Police find incriminating packages on M56 after chase ends in drama outside Manchester Airport

A getaway van driver threw suspected packages of heroin onto the M56 motorway before being arrested outside Manchester Airport.
Officers at Cheshire Police first tried to stop the driver of the white Mercedes Sprinter van on the M56 near Warrington at around 5.30pm yesterday (March 5). Police he failed to stop and 'made off at speed'.
A dramatic chase followed, with officers from Greater Manchester Police joining the pursuit as the police helicopter hovered overhead. The driver left the M56 and headed onto the A555 towards Manchester Airport.

Police said a 'number of packages were thrown from the van'. It came to a stop after driving through a barrier into a multi-storey car park at the airport.
The driver tried to run from officers but was arrested near the Radisson Blu hotel. Officers later found the packages full of suspected heroin on the M56.
A 42-year-old man, from Manchester, was arrested on the scene on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs, being concerned in the supply of class A drugs and failing to stop for officers. He remains in custody to be quizzed by detectives.
After the arrest, Chief Inspector John Forshaw, of the Cheshire Police Road and Crime unit, said: "This is another fantastic result which has led to the removal of a large quantity of illegal drugs from the streets of Cheshire, and I would like to thank our colleagues at GMP for the support they provided. While this investigation is in the early stages, I hope that these arrests provide reassurance for residents in the area and the wider community.
