Pilots have described the terrifying moment they 'hit a wall of rain' as they tried to land at Manchester Airport during a thunderstorm. The TUI flight from Zakynthos in Greece was forced to divert to Newcastle after the pilot and co-pilot lost suddenly sight of the runway as they made their descent.
In a serious incident report into the last-ditch aborted landing, the pilots described it 'all going black outside' as they hit a band of torrential rain while coming into land on June 12 last year. But as they attempted to pull the Boeing 737 out of the descent a 'sudden loss of headwind' meant the plane's speed began 'rapidly reducing'.
Concerned they were about to stall, the pilot 'applied a nose-down pitch input to prevent further speed loss', which triggered the plane's 'ground proximity warning system'. The pilot then increased to full thrust and the plane climbed away safely.

The operators manual recommends landings should not be attempted 'in the face of an approaching thunderstorm'. But as the pilots could initially 'clearly see the runway' they decided it was safe to continue, the Air Accident Investigation Branch report says.
"Both pilots reported being startled by the sudden loss of visual reference on the approach," the report adds. "The commander reported that he was surprised that the aircraft was not performing as he expected on a go-around and he became focused on the airspeed loss; it took him a few moments to understand what was happening."
No-one was injured during the aborted landing and the plane diverted to Newcastle without further incident. The report said a number of recommendations had since been made, including raising awareness
