Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City's draw at Southampton was a timely reminder that the Premier League title race is far from over.
The Blues took a point on the south coast as Aymeric Laporte 's second-half header cancelled out Kyle Walker-Peters' first-half goal for Saints.
And while City stuttered in the final third and looked vulnerable at the back, Guardiola dismissed the idea that City had been below their usual standard in the opening 45 minutes.
But he did think that the two dropped points, which gives Liverpool the chance to trim the lead to six points if they win their two games in hand - starting with a trip to Crystal Palace tomorrow - underlined his assertion that the title race was far from over.
"I have to tell you what I said before," he said. "Even today, winning the game the title race would not be over.
"No-one is champions in January. Many tough games like today must be played. We tried to play good, to try to defend our badge and our people as best as possible.
"The title being over will be a consequence for what we have done. Today what they did was really good."
City had misfired in the final third in the opening 45 minutes, with Raheem Sterling missing a great chance to level and too many players taking bad options.
But Guardiola disagreed that they had been poor: "I disagree with you absolutely.
"We played really well. Maybe 15 to 20 minutes we were maybe not aggressive enough but the last 20 to 25 minutes we were excellent and the second half was excellent.
"We made an excellent performance over 90 minutes against a top side. They have experience and many things but we made an exceptional performance. "
