Pep Guardiola said the 'exceptional' Jack Grealish had his best ever game for Manchester City in their 1-1 draw with Southampton.
The Premier League leaders saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end at St Mary's, the ground that had proved the launchpad for their unstoppable run last season. Aymeric Laporte cancelled out Kyle Walker Peters' early opener but City could not find another goal and had to settle for a point.
Grealish started up front in an all-English front line for City but was seemingly well-marshalled by the home team; neither of his two shots tested the Saints' goalkeeper and his most notable actions were getting involved in a spat with Oriol Romeu and then waiting for the Southampton midfielder in the tunnel after the game.
City's £100m signing still appears to be waiting for the performance that will kickstart his career at the Etihad, with just three goals and three assists from 22 appearances in all competitions so far.
Guardiola, though, suggested the player hit a new high against Southampton.
The manager was defiantly upbeat after the draw, refusing to accept that his side had dropped points or that they had been below their best at any point in the game. And when questions were asked about Grealish's contribution, Guardiola did not hesitate with his answer.
“The best game he has played since he has been with us, by far," he said. "This was an exceptional performance. He played really, really well. I’m talking about when he has the ball, what he has to do. In a team that is so tight, they defend so narrow, it is not easy. He played exceptionally.
“In Aston Villa he played wide and after he moved wherever he wants and came inside.
“I think he’s the perfect player to play between the lines.
