Pep Guardiola refused to say whether Joao Cancelo would be part of Manchester City this season after the defender was absent for the Community Shield.
Having spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayern Munich after a serious falling out with the manager, Cancelo returned to the Etihad in the summer and played a part in their pre-season matches in Japan and Korea. However, while new signing Josko Gvardiol travelled to London with the squad to take on Arsenal despite not playing a part in the game, there was no sign of Cancelo.
With no injury issue preventing the Portugal defender from being at Wembley, Guardiola was asked afterwards if the full-back was in his plans for the long term but instead stuck to commenting on the day. "He had to go home with the family and was not here," the coach said.
City are facing a battle to keep their only other senior full-back Kyle Walker, with Bayern having given him an attractive offer to join them this summer. The fact that the right-back is still with the Blues, and captained them in the Community Shield, despite talks between the two clubs over a fee can encourage City though.

Cancelo continues to face an uncertain future at the Etihad and his absence last season was not detrimental to the team; he was absent for the months where City really found their form to win an incredible Treble, with Rico Lewis one of the players stepping up to offer the team options. In addition, new £78m signing Josko Gvardiol is able to play on the left of defence as well as centrally - something picked up on by Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Begiristain.
