Nicholas Britell Teases the ‘Succession’ Series Finale: ‘It’s 90 Minutes. It’s a Huge Episode, Like a Movie’

After four seasons, the HBO series Succession comes to an end. The premium cable network dropped a preview for the series finale and has many dissecting every frame. Check out the preview in the video posted above.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Ari Aster‘s three-hour surrealist drama “Beau Is Afraid” marked a tonal shift from his nightmare-inducing films “Midsommar” and “Hereditary.” In the feature, which tackles inherited trauma and mommy issues, Joaquin Phoenix plays Beau, who finds himself on an Odyssean journey to return home after his mother’s untimely death. To score the film, Aster recruited “Midsommar” composer Bobby Krlic, but, unlike their last collaboration, creating the music of “Beau Is Afraid” was a “long and arduous process” as they worked to crack the sound of Beau’s journey. Here, the two discuss their collaboration and how one cue, “Suburban Dream,” helped unlock the film’s sonic landscape.

With just the CW left tomorrow, the near-talent-free upfronts are winding down, and shows are still being shuttered in New York City, while on the picket lines in LA there was Mariachism, tacos, tunes and some Mandalorians to galvanize the troops.

Discovery kicked off its 2023 upfront presentation in a no-frills way, with an overall brand sizzle and ad chief Jon Steinlauf giving a few remarks on stage at the Theater at Madison Square Garden Wednesday. While the presentation covering HBO, Max, CNN, Food Network, HGTV, Discovery and more Warner Bros. Discovery brands was shorter than last year’s show (which was the company’s first since the merger that created it last April) the tight 90-minute presentation still covered each of its key divisions. Albeit, with much less sizzle, with no stars in attendance amid the writers strike. “Let me just start by saying I am hopeful that a fair resolution is found soon with the writers,” HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys said, adding that he hopes for a return of talent to the stage, “making this a far more entertaining show” compared to “me and my clips.”

latest episode of “Succession,” titled “Tailgate Party,” sees Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) hosting a pre-election fundraising party while trying to balance the tension in their marriage.“When Jesse [Armstrong] told us about the episode, he pitched it as like a ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ kind of piece in that marriage tensions at a party, trying to keep up a good front, trying to keep up a happy marriage face,” Snook said during Sunday’s behind-the-scenes featurette. Creator Jesse Armstrong noted that Tom and Shiv are in “quite a curious place” during the episode. “They both know exactly what happened,” he said.

Succession fans are still reeling from the surprise death of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in season four.In episode three, titled Connor’s Wedding, the Waystar RoyCo CEO departed on a flight to Sweden with some of his closest advisors to negotiate a new deal with Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), while Logan’s children Roman (Kieran Culkin), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong) attended their brother Connor’s (Alan Ruck) wedding on a cruise ship in New York.While Connor was hopeful his father would make time for a fly-by visit, Roman, Kendall and Shiv were soon informed by Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) over the phone that Logan had fallen ill during the flight and was unresponsive.After some emotional final goodbyes over the phone, Logan was later pronounced dead when the private plane landed back on US soil. Roman, Kendall and Shiv were then faced with issuing a statement to the press and the ramifications of Logan’s death on the future of Waystar RoyCo.Since then, we’ve seen Kendall and Roman step up as the new co-CEO’s of the company, with Shiv having an unofficial (yet equally important) role behind the scenes.

HBO‘s “Succession” ends later this month, and creator Jesse Armstrong wants to pull out all the stops for the series finale. IndieWire (via Variety) reports that the show’s composer, Nicolas Britell, leaked how long the show’s final episode will be—and it’s the length of a feature film.
