‘Shōgun’ Composers Spent More Than Two Years Composing Four Hours of Music

Jon Burlingame FX’s acclaimed miniseries “Shōgun,” now nearing its halfway point, sports a score quite unlike Maurice Jarre’s music for the 1980 original adaptation. While utilizing authentic Japanese instruments, the music takes a very modern approach that applies today’s technology and advanced sonic manipulation in ways that were impossible four decades ago.

10 Famous Movie Scores Snubbed by the Oscars, From ‘Jurassic Park’ to ‘Psycho’

Jon Burlingame In an ideal world, the Academy’s music branch would watch all the movies and decide which five have met the criteria for excellence in musical scoring. But we all know that many other factors come into play: Was the film commercially successful? Is the composer already popular with his or her peers? Have voters been swayed by an effective campaign? In fact, dozens of fine scores have been ignored by the Academy over the years. And a handful have gone down in history as among the overlooked gems of the past eight decades: David Raksin’s haunting music for the murder mystery starring Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney was, by far, the most popular score of the 1940s at 20th Century Fox.

Steven Gaydos Executive VP of Content The enduring artistry of the late film composer-songwriter Michel Legrand is on full display in Todd Haynes’ “May December.” But not everyone is happy to hear Haynes’ usage of the Legrand score from Joseph Losey’s 1971 romantic drama “The Go-Between,” repurposed to jarring (if you don’t like it) but provocative (if you do) effect. Whichever side of that coin you land on, Legrand’s impact upon film music is unlikely to cause debate.

‘Gloria!’ Review: Upbeat Italian Convent Drama Gives 18th-Century Baroque Standards a Girl-Power Pop Makeover

Guy Lodge Film Critic With the possible exception of “Tora! Tora! Tora!,” any film with an exclamation point in the title should by rights be a spangly, full-scale musical. A frothy tale of warring classical music sensibilities in a Venetian girls’ refuge, “Gloria!” stops short of complete commitment to that rule — but it’s when it fully suspends reality for all-singing, all-stamping choral ecstasy that Margherita Vicario‘s uneven debut is most exciting.

American Federation of Musicians, AMPTP Resume Contract Talks Amid Fight Over Streaming Residual Fees: ‘Their Value Cannot Be Denied’

Jon Burlingame As the American Federation of Musicians and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers resumed contract negotiations Wednesday, the AFM has released statistics that shed light on the changing nature of employment for industry musicians who play on many of the film and TV shows now being made. When a film or TV show that features AFM musicians makes it to a secondary market — airing on broadcast or cable, released on home video, or even transitioning to a streaming service — that triggers a residual payment to actors, writers, directors and craftspeople, essentially sharing in the profits of a successful project. But the studios have steadfastly resisted granting musicians a residual payment for original series, movies and other programs that are made specifically for streaming services.

‘Dying’ Review: Matthias Glasner’s Three-Hour Thanatopsis Feels Slight, Despite Its Epic Running Time

Siddhant Adlakha Over three hours and five different chapters, Matthias Glasner’s “Dying” chronicles the travails of an estranged family of four: an elderly couple on the brink of death, their successful composer son and their alcoholic, ne’er-do-well daughter. The film casts a wide net over their experiences, and every leading performance is as impeccable as the last. However, Glasner’s formal rigidity prevents their stories from feeling intrinsically bound, leaving each of them with little to say.
