Tongue has left his position as Under-18s coach at Ipswich, who are challenging for promotion to the Premier League this season, to join United and he previously worked for Manchester City for nine years in different roles.
The young coach was born in Hyde, Greater Manchester and he worked with former United assistant first-team coach and now-Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna during his time at Portman Road.
Tongue was a goalkeeper in his playing days with Bradford City’s youth team, then with Barrow in the National League.
