When Diogo Dalot first arrived at Manchester United, Sir Bobby Charlton was still a significant presence around Old Trafford. For many in the United side at Bramall Lane on Saturday night, they would only heard the stories of Charlton, but Dalot was one of maybe half-a-dozen who would have met one of the most important figures in the club's history.
The 86-year-old - who died on Saturday morning and was never far from the thoughts of anyone associated with United later yesterday as they paid tribute during the game against Sheffield United - hasn't been a regular at games for more than three years, since he was diagnosed with dementia in 2020.
But Dalot, who joined the club in June 2018, is one of the lucky few who had met the man and didn't need to rely solely on the mythology. It was fitting that the goalscorers in Yorkshire in a scrappy 2-1 win were both players who had met Charlton, in Dalot and Scott McTominay.

If the United legend would have enjoyed the quality of Dalot's winner, he would have smiled at the joyous celebrations in front of the away end as well. When Charlton was scoring goals for this club there was no red smoke bombs in the away end, but his love for a club that came to dominate his life never wavered.
When Dalot arrived at Old Trafford, Charlton was into his ninth decade, but even though he had ended his 39-year stint as a director, he was still a ubiquitous presence at games and a great support for the players, whatever the result.
