Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been told Harry Kane cannot be allowed to run down his contract.
It is understood Spurs owner Joe Lewis has instructed Levy to either sell Kane or renew his contract that expires next June. Kane is not expected to sign a new deal with Tottenham.
Kane, who turns 30 next week, is Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag's ideal striker target but the club have turned to Rasmus Hojlund of Atalanta amid Levy's refusal to sell Kane to a Premier League club.
England captain Kane is believed to be demanding an annual salary of £30million, which would have to include incentives and image rights as the salary would be too steep for the majority of clubs.

The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this month United were still monitoring Kane's situation on the off-chance Spurs are open to selling him to a domestic rival. Bayern Munich are the only club who have bid for Kane but their £65million offer was rejected.
United do not want to "play games" with Levy, who is infamous for driving a hard bargain and prolonging negotiations.
If Kane is not sold this summer, he will be able to agree a pre-contract deal with an overseas club in the January transfer window or play out the season at Spurs and move to another English club in 12 months.
Ten Hag refused to discuss Kane at a press conference on Friday when he was asked why United were not competing to sign a striker who was out of contract in under 12 months.
United have already invested £107m to sign Mason Mount and Andre Onana but they currently lack an out-and-out striker as Anthony Martial is still recovering from a torn hamstring.
