A restaurant in Manchester has been named one of the best new eateries in the country. Higher Ground, in the city centre, which is approaching its first anniversary, has been recognised by the prestigious Good Food Guide.
They will be up against six others for the Best New Restaurant gong at the guide's inaugural awards ceremony in London at the end of the month.
The restaurant, on the outskirts of Chinatown, opened early last year. It was founded by three industry veterans who met in New York before eventually setting up in Manchester. Front-of-house man Richard Cossins had worked with three-star chef Simon Rogan at his restaurant at Claridge’s in London.

Chef Joe Otway had been working at the Michelin-starred Relae in Copenhagen, and all three - including wine expert Daniel Craig-Martin - worked together at the two Michelin-star Blue Hill at Stone Barns, just north of Manhattan.
Higher Ground started life as a pop-up at the bungalow venue opposite the Gay Village, now part of the Kampus development, in 2020 but was forced to close after the pandemic hit.
Its three founders went on to open Cinderwood Market Garden in Cheshire and Flawd, a neighbourhood wine bar and bottle shop in Ancoats in 2021, before resurrecting Higher Ground and opening the doors of their current base in Faulkner House on New York Street last February.
It is the only Greater Manchester venue among the 34 nominees for the awards being held at the historic Drury Lane Theatre on January 30.
Co-Founder Richard said: "We’re humbled to be recognised by such a prestigious title and look forward to seeing many of our friends and industry colleagues at the awards
