Powers to expand Greater Manchester Police powers to stop and search individuals in some parts of the city have been extended and expanded, following an altercation outside a shop yesterday (January 22). After the altercation, one teenager was arrested.
Officers in Failsworth have been given a further 24 hours to stop and search people in the area following the incident, which took place on Ashton Road West between two groups that police say are known to each other. At least one member of the rival groups was said to be carrying a knife.
These powers have this evening (January 23) been expanded to Limeside while police investigations into the matter continue. The Section 60 powers allow officers to stop and search any individual in these areas, without first having reasonable grounds to stop them.

Greater Manchester Police has released two maps of the area where their officers will be able to stop and search anyone at will.
Inspector Paul Giannasi of GMP’s Oldham District said; “The additional powers granted this evening demonstrate our robust and thorough approach to incidents of this nature.
“Although this is thought to be an isolated incident between groups known to one another, we understand the impact incidents like these can have on communities, particularly those just trying to go about their daily business. Thankfully no members of the wider public reported injuries.
“Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak with officers out in the area, and we would ask anyone who has any information on Monday’s altercation, including knowing the identities of those involved, to contact GMP on 101 quoting log 2399 of 22/01/24.
