Greater Manchester Police make raids under cover of darkness and snow - seeing scores of arrests and flashy goods seized

Greater Manchester Police are looking to fill the cells today (January 16) following the execution of early morning raids, checks on public transport, and traffic stops across one region of the city. Aiming to catch and arrest 40 suspected criminals in one day, Oldham's police commander said "It's not about scaring people, it's about providing reassurance."
The day of police action, named Operation Avro, is a GMP initiative that sees large numbers of officers from across the force take part in a coordinated push against hardened criminals and lawbreakers in one particular area. This meant doors were kicked in and arrests were made at three separate addresses, all before the sun had come up over snowy Oldham.
Three people were arrested as part of the execution of these early morning raids, which all took place before 7am. This included a suspected drug dealer on Cotton Mill Road and a cannabis farm spread over three rooms of a semi-detached home on Williamson Crescent. With a focus on the proceeds of crime, the operation has also seen a top-of-the-range Audi RS8 and Rolex watch seized from suspected criminals.

Oldham's District Commander and GMP Chief Superintendent Phil Hutchinson said: "We do this day in, day out, this is an opportunity for us to showcase our work to the public, and offer them some reassurance about the expert work that we do. Today is just more of a heavy hit because we have a lot more force resources."
