Manchester City are appealing to their own fans for help in banning 'idiots' who sang offensive chants about the late, great Sir Bobby Charlton.
On the day that the Blues held a minute of applause to remember one of their own in Francis Lee, United announced the passing of Sir Bobby on Saturday afternoon while City were playing Brighton in the Premier League. John Stones and Pep Guardiola led tributes from the club after the game, with the manager saying: "This type of player and personality represents English football like [no one] else can do."
However, a handful of supporters were heard singing offensive chants about Charlton during the afternoon that prompted complaints from fellow Blues and a City source to slam them as "idiots who don't represent our club or our fans". A video circulating on social media showed one such chant being sung on an Etihad Stadium concourse.

A club statement to the Manchester Evening News said: "Manchester City FC are extremely disappointed to have learned of reports of offensive chanting from a small number of individuals about Sir Bobby Charlton in some of the concourses of Etihad Stadium during half time of yesterday’s Premier League fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion.
"The club condemns these chants in the strongest terms, and apologises unreservedly to the family and friends of Sir Bobby, and to all those at Manchester United. On this day of all days, when the stadium stood to pay tribute to our own legend in Francis Lee, Manchester City supporters should understand and appreciate as keenly as anyone the need for respect in our game.
