Bristol Rovers have sacked former Manchester City player Joey Barton as manager after a poor start to the season left the club 16th in League One.
The Pirates were expected to push for the play-offs this term but have recorded just four wins in 13 league matches so far, with just one victory in their last five matches. Barton had been at the club for almost three years, leading them to promotion in his first full season.
A club statement on Thursday read: “Bristol Rovers Football Club can confirm that today the club has relieved First Team Manager Joey Barton of his duties. Everyone at the club would like to thank Joey for all his efforts and wish him well in the future. “In the interim, Andy Mangan will lead the team supported by Glenn Whelan, Danny Ventre and Anssi Jaakkola who will remain in post.”

Barton - who made 153 appearances for City having come through the academy ranks - had signed a three-year extension in July 2022 after securing a phenomenal promotion from League Two on goal difference thanks to an extraordinary final day 7-0 win over Scunthorpe United.
He ensured the club kept their League One status with a 17th-place finish last season but his final game as Rovers boss came in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with play-off chasing Stevenage. He had previously enjoyed a spell at Fleetwood Town from June 2018 to January 2021.
