Coronation Street star Ciarán Griffiths, who plays bad boy Damon Hay in the soap, has revealed the brilliant three-word comeback he uses when people heckle him for playing a gay character in the past.
The 40 year old actor joined Coronation Street back in 2022 and has already been involved in plenty of drama, including breaking up Sarah Barlow and Adam's marriage by getting Sarah pregnant and kidnapping Adam. TV viewers may know Ciarán from elsewhere however as before joining Corrie, he had a successful career and appeared in shows such as City Road, The Bill, Holby City, Waterloo Road, and EastEnders.
He is perhaps best known for his role as gay gangster Mickey Maguire in the comedy-drama Shameless, where he played a key role in exploring his character's struggle with his sexuality. As part of his experience playing Mickey, Ciarán has opened up about the negative attention he's received due to his character's sexuality.
Despite being straight himself, Ciarán shared that he often faces mockery and heckling for playing a gay character on the show. He explained: “It's usually a bunch of drunk lads.
They know I am not gay and then one lad will say, 'I have to ask this question' and he'll get all his mates' attention and say, 'Are you gay?'” However, when faced by such comments and questions, the soap star has revealed that he’s been known to dish out a hilarious response that led to him having to leave a club on one occasion.
“They all fall about laughing but I generally reply, 'Ask your dad!' I did that once and ended up having to leave the club,” he said, according to the Daily Star. Despite these challenges, Ciarán said it hasn't affected his love life and he added that he didn't mind it when women asked the question.
