Coronation Street praised for moving tribute to Manchester Arena victims five years on

Coronation Street have been praised for an emotional scene that left fans in tears on Friday, where they paid tribute to the Manchester Arena victims. An emotional exchange between Gail Platt and Eileen Grimshaw saw the pair stand by a mosaic bench dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Manchester Arena bombing on 22 May 2017.

As the pair, who are usually sworn enemies, stood clutching bouquets of flowers Gail told Eileen: “It's a lovely bench, isn't it?” To which Eileen said: “It is. It's just a crying shame it even has to be here,” and Gail replied: “Five years on Sunday.” The pair were holding a bouquet of flowers each during the exchange in front of the bench dedicated “for Martyn and all those who lost their lives on the 22nd of May 2017.

We stand together.” The inscription are in memory of bomb victim and Coronation Street super fan Martyn Hett who was one of 22 people killed at the Ariana Grande concert. As the exchange continued Gail said: “They went out for a concert and they never came back,” while Eileen referred to the pair’s usually troubled relationship: “Look at us two being civil to each other.” To which Gail said: “Yeah, well, some things are bigger than you and me Eileen.” The pair then laid their bouquets on the bench together in a mark of solidarity. The soap’s cast were among the hundreds who turned out to see super fan Martyn laid to rest after he died following the tragic bombing.

Martyn was a massive fan of the soap and even had a Deirdre Barlow tattoo. The service was said to be "theatrical" due to the PR manager’s "larger-than-life personality" and his desire for people to wear black but with "something fabulous". Pictures show Martyn had a Corrie-themed coffin which featured an image of a

There's big drama for Fiz Stape this week in Coronation Street, when it looks like her relationship with Phill is definitely on the rocks - only for him to pop the question. And when she talked about the latest development in Fiz's love life, actress Jennie McAlpine, who plays the Weatherfield favourite, mused that a regular wedding to Phill Whittaker (Jamie Kenna) would definitely be an improvement on the last time she tied the knot! "The last wedding Fiz had was in prison, with only Chesney and the prison guard as guests," says Jennie. "So I think it would be lovely for her to have a nice white wedding, and a happy ending." 'Get out of your head!' Coronation Street's Bill Roache, 90, explains his key to long life
Radio 4: "Your heart is where your love and enjoyment and true self resides."Bill, who admits he keeps well hydrated and has vegetables on hand to stave any hunger pangs, tries his best to avoid stress. He also aspires to keep active and maintain his own daily tasks. The actor admitted during the interview that although ITV offers him use of a complimentary car service to work, he always opts to drive himself.Though he says there may be a time when he will take up the channel's offer, for the time being he is fine.In another recent interview, he challenged: "Decline is not inevitable."Bill is even aspiring to become the "first centenarian" to have an ongoing role in a TV drama. It looks like he could be well on the way to achieving that goal after he revealed that a recent health check put his bodily age at 65 - 25 years younger than his biological age.He is also challenging people's preconceptions about aging and the assumption that that getting older has to mean a decrease in function."The celebration of longevity is a clear indication that the ageing process is generally seen as a decline," he argued to the Daily Star.“The truth, as I see it, is very different. The human body was created as a vehicle for the soul in the physical world.“It is there for the soul’s use for as long as it is required, with the cells rejuvenating to keep it in prime condition.”Meanwhile, Bill also recently spoke about his crush on Queen Elizabeth, confessing he had met her eight times.Recalling that he first met the monarch when he was serving in the army aged 21, he exclaimed: "I really fancied her!"
